With many parents returning to work (from home) while their children are still on holidays, it’s important to get the balance of indoor comfort right for everyone. The kids might be coming and going, letting bursts of hot air in as they open doors, so we have prepared a number of tips you can action to help everyone enjoy the air conditioned comfort of home all day and night during the summer holidays.

1. Don’t set the temperature too low and ensure cooling mode is set

It can be tempting to lower the air conditioning temperature indoors to cool the home faster, however, this can contribute to an increase in energy use with minimal comfort gains. Instead, in summer it's important to ensure the air conditioner mode is set to cooling. Setting the temperature at a recommended 23 degrees Celsius will help to create a comfortable environment and reduce energy consumption.

2. Maximise family comfort and minimise consumption

Programming the operation of air conditioning systems will help provide a stable level of comfort throughout the day. Starting the cooling process in the morning when the air inside and outside the home is cooler will help reach the set temperature quicker without making the system work hardest during the hottest parts of the day.

3. Use Wi-Fi technology to manage air conditioning systems from smart devices
Smart technology makes it easy to control an air conditioner from the desk using a smartphone or tablet or using voice command when available. Fujitsu General offers a suite of Wi-Fi controller options for new and existing systems up to 10 years old enabling individual cooling zones, timers and unique optimisation to provide comfort across the day to suit individual and collective needs.

4. Control the areas being cooled to avoid wasting energy

Optimise air conditioner use during the extreme temperatures of summer by cooling the spaces where the home office is set up and where the kids will spend most of their time. Ducted air conditioning systems enable this using zone control, which directs airflow to specified areas within the home. However, if a smaller home or unit has one wall mounted unit installed in the living area, and the home office is set up in another room, consider relocating to the living room on those really hot days. Also, close doors to rooms not being used during the day to guide the cool air to where it’s needed.

5. Keep the indoor and outdoor units clean

Dust and debris can build-up on both the indoor and outdoor unit, restricting airflow. This can cause the system to work harder, leading to higher energy usage and increased running costs. Wipe them down, and clean the indoor unit filters regularly.

Maintaining a comfortable and cooled environment will keep the household happy during the holidays, helping to avoid conflicts and exhaustion from heat.
